Apple or Pear Shaped Body?

If you’re fighting that stubborn body fat you’ll find the Apples and Pears body shape system to be one of the simplest methods of identifying your body shape. It’s simpler to figure out yourself. If you tend to store fat:

  • Above the waist, you have an Apple shaped body
  • Below the waist, you have a Pear shape body

It can be directly related to your overall health and wellness. People who have metabolic syndrome typically have apple-shaped bodies, meaning they have larger waists and carry a lot of weight around their abdomens. It’s suggested that a pear-shaped body — that is, carrying more of your weight around your hips and having a narrower waist — doesn’t increase your risk of diabetes, heart disease and other complications of metabolic syndrome.

How to get your Waist-to-hip-ratio (WHR)?

To calculate your WHR you simply need to measure your waist and your hips, using a measuring tape, it is important to make sure you take your measurements in the right place.

Your waist circumference: measure midway between your lowest rib and the top of your hips – it should be the part just above your belly button.

Your hip circumference: measure at the widest point around the buttocks. Again, hold the tape snugly but don’t pull it in, and make sure it’s level all the way around.

Once you have your waist and hip measurements, divide your waist figure by your hip figure. For example:

  • Waist measurement: 77cm
  • Hip measurement: 94cm

To calculate your waist-to-hip ratio: 77 / 94 = 0.82.

What does the WHR measurement mean?

Women with a WHR ratio of 0.8 or below, and men at 0.95 or below are pear shaped. People with pear shaped bodies are in the lower risk category for health problems such as type II diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer.

Women with a WHR ratio of 0.85 or above, and men with a ratio of 1.0 or above are considered to have apple shaped bodies. Fat tends to gather around the abdomens, and apple shaped bodies face a high risk of type II diabetes and heart disease, and some types of cancer.

People whose ratios fall between the apple and pear thresholds are at moderate risk of health problems, and are sometimes called avocado shape.

World Health Organisation has also defined abdominal obesity as being a waist-hip ratio above 0.90 for males and above 0.85 for females.
